SkinSense Feb 2011: A Few Words about Fillers

For the full color version (with photos) of this letter, click here.

I was out with a group of friends recently and the subject of fillers came up.  One of the women, whom I had only met that day, made a face.  She told a story of a friend of hers who had gotten a lot of fillers and “didn’t look like herself” anymore.  She couldn’t say exactly why, but the effect apparently was not good.

I nodded and agreed that sometimes fillers can be done badly or to excess, with the result being a face that looks slightly artificial or “done.”  I immediately thought of the latest episode of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.”  Those of you who know me and have read my newsletters know that “Real Housewives” is a guilty pleasure of mine.  Don’t get me started; I mean, how “real” are these women, and can you really call them “housewives?” ;-)

SilkPeel is Here!

“I love the way my skin feels!  Thank you!”

“My skin feels so smooth! I want to do this every month!”

These are the kind of comments I’ve been getting since starting the new SilkPeel procedure recently. I think I may have finally found the perfect non-invasive skin treatment!

If you have skin issues such as dullness, uneven tone, acne, oiliness, or dryness, SilkPeel can help. Or if you just want to freshen up your skin without committing to more aggressive treatments such as chemical peels or light therapy, SilkPeel is a great option.

SilkPeel is a new technology that combines gentle exfoliation, vacuum suction for deep cleaning, and simultaneous infusion of one of four therapeutic solutions to target acne, dehydration, sun damage, or pigmentation issues.

The treatments are painless and can be performed every 2 to 3 weeks. Treatment sessions generally take 15 to 20 minutes. Areas that can be treated include the face, neck, chest, hands, back, legs, arms . . . in other words, almost anywhere!

Many of you are familiar with microdermabrasion. We have been performing diamond microdermabrasion in our office for years. But there are two main differences between regular microdermabrasion and SilkPeel. First, SilkPeel has an infusion component that effectively delivers topicals to the deep layers of skin. Second, SilkPeel is gentler and can even be used with sensitive skin and rosacea. There is even a smooth head for those who just want infusion without exfoliation.

Downtime with SilkPeel is minimal–mild pinkness after treatment that fades quickly. I can attest to this. I was excited to see that my sensitive skin tolerated this procedure well. (Yes, I try out all treatments on myself :) )

A face and neck treatment is priced at $125.00. A series of treatments yields the best results. Your sixth treatment is free!

As an introductory special, I’m offering a face/neck treatment for $100.00 for the first ten people to schedule, so call David at 459-4869, ext 19!

For more info, see the SilkPeel website at www.silkpeel.com.

Have a great weekend!

SkinSense Jan 2010: Peptides: What are They and What Can They Do For You?

Happy New Year!  My new year’s resolution is to keep my letters brief!  Some people have complained (well, mostly my husband) that I tend to go on and on.  Wait a minute; I’m not sure he’s talking about my newsletters!  :-)   If you’re like me, you probably get bombarded daily with hundreds of e-mails as well as newspapers, magazines, internet articles, Facebook, Twitter, etc.  Sometimes I feel like I’m trying to drink from a fire hose in this age of information overload. I sympathize with you!

So, let’s get down to business.  No, first, a story:

I was reflecting on my practice while at the gym last week.  Yes, every new year I resolve to get to the gym at least once a quarter.  Now I’m good till April.  :-)   So, I’m in the gym, trudging along on the treadmill, watching my favorite guilty pleasure show,  “Real Housewives of Orange County” on the flatscreen.  (Actually, it’s my second favorite; Real Housewives of NYC is the best!).   Anyway, there’s no sound, and I can’t read the subtitles, so I have to guess at what’s going on.

Why Women Wrinkle Around Mouth

Why Women Wrinkle Around Mouth.

I see women every day who hate the little vertical lines around the mouth.  This article explains why women are more prone to develop these lines.  Men have beards, and all the support structures for those hair follicles thickens the skin.  However, I am now using a new technique of laying down fines lines of diluted filler in the upper lip to strengthen the tissue.  This is usually done in conjunction with a little filler to restore lip volume.  So far, I’m liking the results!

How to get rid of unsightly age spots

How to get rid of unsightly age spots.

Here is a good article about sun spots (also called age spots or liver spots).  We have had good results with IPL and bleaching creams.  I’m also liking the new Melanage mini-peel.

DIY Botox….NOT!

The other day, I stumbled upon a website in which a woman from Dallas was selling a Botox- like product and showing how to use it on yourself.  It was scary on many levels and would have been funny if she hadn’t been serious.  First, she holds up a vial that she refers to as Botox, though the vial looks to be the size and shape of Dysport.  (Dysport is dosed differently than Botox). She then holds up a syringe which appears to be a 1 cc tuberculin syringe, but refers to it as “100 cc’s”.  She reconstitutes the vial with “saline” (doesn’t specify what kind of saline) and then proceeds to inject herself.  She instructs the viewer to inject according to the lines on the syringe.  No mention of anatomical landmarks, dosing, danger zones, etc.  The Texas Department of State Health Services is now servicing a complaint against her and her video has been shut down, thank goodness.  I am concerned about people trying to perform cosmetic procedures on themselves.  I have seen chemical peels being sold on E-Bay and women talking about doing their own peels on beauty discussion boards.  My advice is to please don’t try  these things at home!  As my patients know, I am super cautious with all my procedures.  There are risks with any medical procedure, and a medical professional is best qualified to weigh risk vs benefit and administer treatments in a professional setting.
