FDA Releases New Sunscreen Guidelines

The FDA finally released their new sunscreen guidelines.  It’s really not that much to get excited about, but here are the highlights:  1.  Look for a sunscreen that says “Broad Spectrum.”  This means that it contains ingredients to protect you from both major wavelengths, ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB).  Ultraviolet A is mainly responsible for skin aging, but also contributes to skin cancer.  Ultraviolet B causes sunburn and is a major contributor to skin cancer.   Also, look for an SPF of at least 15.  This is not new; in fact, I usually recommend a 30 or above if you’re going to have significant exposure.  2.  Sunscreens with SPF over 50 will now be labelled “50+”.  SPF’s above 50 probably do not add a significant amount of additional protection.  3.  Sunscreens can no longer be called “water proof.”  They have to be called “highly water resistant”.

For more information, see the FDA website here.

PS  Remember that if you’re wearing sunscreens religiously, do take a vitamin D supplement.  I recommend 1000 units of vitamin D3 daily for adults.

Deep Wrinkles/Weak Bones?

A study at Yale University has found an association between deep facial wrinkles and decreased bone density.  This is an interesting correlation and does make sense in a couple of ways.  First, part of facial aging involves loss of bone mass; that is, when the “scaffold” shrinks, the skin forms folds and creases.  So, the wrinkles are the result of too much skin for the underlying bone, or, as one of my colleagues puts it, “You have a size 8 skin on a size 6 face.”

More intriguing is the possibility that impaired collagen formation is common to both situations.  What should you do?  Eat good quality protein, which is essential to collagen formation, take vitamin C, 500 mg three times daily (also essential for collagen formation) and take vitamin D supplements.  My readers know that I routinely recommend at least 1000 units of vitamin D3 daily, especially if you’re avoiding the sun and/or wearing sunscreens.  Which, of course, you are doing if you’re worried about wrinkling!

The other important thing; do plenty of weight bearing exercise, which will help keep your bones healthy.  And finally, do not smoke; this is bad for both skin and bones!  Read more here.
