SkinSense Sept 09: When Free Radicals Attack: An Anti-Aging Arsenal

Sept 22, 2009

Dear Friends,

Happy first day of fall!  I haven’t written anything in awhile, as I’ve been busy building this website!  I will use the site to publish and archive my newsletters, as well as to post information about skin care and cosmetic dermatology.  I hope you will find it interesting.  And if anyone has any suggestions, please speak up!

I started a series on skin care back in February.  The first letter was about moisturizers, and the second was about sun protection. Next, I want to discuss anti-aging treatments.  This is what my patients are usually interested in when they ask, “What should I use on my skin?”

Have you ever looked in the mirror and seen some lines that weren’t there before?  If you’re over 40, especially if you’re pale like me, you probably have.  Not a good feeling. Continue Reading »

UPDATE 2-US FDA: Allergan eyelash drug promotion misleading | Markets | Markets News | Reuters .

The bottom line here is that eyelid redness can occur, and bacterial contamination is possible if the applicator gets contaminated.  So, if you are using Latisse, be sure and only use the appplicators once!

Summer’s End

Summer is the busy season for dermatologists.  Patients have asked me why that is, and it’s for a lot of reasons.  On the medical side, we see a lot of teachers and students for routine skin checks and visits, and we see a lot more skin cancers in our older patients (things seem to grow faster in the summer).  Then, there’s the rashes; the hotter it gets, the more people get rashes of all sorts and the hotter the temps, the more miserable the patients.  With a summer as hot as ours was, you can imagine how busy we’ve been!

On the cosmetic side, business also picks up in the summer with patients wanting to get “tuned up” for weddings, graduations, reunions, trips, etc.  Then, at this time every year, just after school starts, everything slows down a little as people get back to the work/school schedule.  So, I decided to take an extra long labor Day weekend to unwind and catch up.  Between work and starting this blog, I’ve have little spare time, and the journals, books, and articles I’ve been wanting to read have piled up all over the place! But now that I’ve had three days of reading and relaxation, I’m starting to get excited again about all the new stuff I’m learning. I’m also much happier now that all the piles are off the floor   :-D  The skin care/cosmetic field continues to expand and evolve with new products, new devices, and new procedures.  I’m looking forward to learning, trying new things, and keeping my readers informed.  So, in the spirit of the new school year, I wish everyone a great year and I look forward to keeping in touch!

Slower Hair Growth in Women – WSJ.com

Slower Hair Growth in Women – WSJ.com.

Women (and men) are always looking for ways to get rid of unwanted hair.  Vaniqa, a prescription cream, does slow hair growth, but has to be used continuously.   I wonder if the Aveeno Positively Smooth lotion really makes hair less noticeable.  I’ll have to look into this!   :-?
